We all love Halloween for the pumpkin lanterns, costumes and decorations, but one of the scariest things about the festival is the gruesome amount of waste that these items can produce.
Check out our recycling tips for a sustainable celebration.
Eerie-sistibly edible eats
It’s just a scary story that you can’t eat your pumpkins, so remove the seeds for roasting and (monster) mash the insides to make pumpkin soup or pie.
The roasted seeds can be added to salads, used as an alternative to flour in gluten free cakes, or even hey, presto made into pesto!
And once the full moon has waned, recycle your jack-o-lantern with your food waste, or simply compost it at home.
Dangerously devilish decorations
We might be spending some more time indoors this winter, so lift your spirits with some creepy crafts to decorate your haunted house. What’s more, you can make fangtastic bat decorations from recycled materials - a treat for the environment too!
Check out our how-to video.
Creepy costumes
This year, take your Halloween costume competition online, so you can still slay (like a vampire!) whilst staying safe. Plus, you can reuse old clothes to make a frightfully easy outfit that won’t scare the planet. Sketch a skeleton onto an old black t-shirt and leggings in chalk and then sponge off the next day. By using chalk instead of toxic paints or glitter, you can avoid any nasty chemicals or microplastics ending up in the oceans and harming sea life.
Food, costumes and decorations? Sorted. Let’s get this sustainable party startled!
